COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Bridging Classroom and Community: Nursing Students Inspire Local Families at the YMCA
By the School of Nursing
This week, the local YMCA was transformed into a vibrant hub of health education, energy, and inspiration. In a powerful display of community outreach, AUHS nursing students stepped out of the hospital corridors and into the neighborhood to present their final clinical projects for their Pediatrics (Peds) and Community Health rotations. The result? An overwhelming success that left an incredible mark on children, parents, and YMCA staff alike.
Transforming Health Education into Play
Rather than relying on dry slideshows or clinical jargon, the students transformed complex health data into vibrant, interactive learning hubs tailored specifically for young minds, while simultaneously equipping parents with valuable takeaways.
They traded heavy textbooks for creative, hands-on toolkits: bubbles that visually tracked “germs” that can spread across space, paper dolls that represent the body, and friendship bracelets that represented distinct emotions.
The energy in the room was so infectious that it sparked an outpouring of enthusiastic praise from the YMCA staff, teachers, and parents alike. The collective feedback highlighted just how deeply the students’ work resonated with the community:
- “I wanted to jump in and play!” remarked one staff member, captured by the high-energy atmosphere.
- “We were completely hooked,” shared a YMCA representative, noting that the creative coping-skills bracelets instantly sparked the children’s interest and gave them a tangible way to express their emotions.
- “This presentation can be used whenever there is a new mom or a babysitter,” another team member noted, emphasizing the immense real-world utility of the hygiene and safety stations.
- “I can see myself putting this on the refrigerator!” a parent shared, thrilled by the professionally designed, easy-to-read nutrition infographics handed out for families to take home.
- “It’s so good that you brought it up because we don’t often see seizures—it brought so much more awareness to the teaching staff,” a teacher expressed, grateful that the students didn’t shy away from critical, tough topics like pediatric seizure management. By blending high-energy play for the kids with accessible, vital data for the adults, the entire team of future nurses left room buzzing with excitement and praise.
“We wanted to prove that learning about health doesn’t have to be intimidating or boring. When kids are laughing and actively participating, the lessons stick.”
Inspiring Parents and YMCA Staff
The impact extended far beyond the children. Parents watching the presentations expressed immense gratitude and inspiration, noting how effortlessly the future nurses connected with their children. What stood out most, however, was the glowing feedback from the YMCA teachers, who commended the students’ deep understanding of childhood psychology, observing, “You know children well. It’s also great that you integrated music into your activities!”

YMCA staff members were deeply moved by the students’ professionalism, organization, and passion. “The energy in the building today was incredible,” shared a YMCA program director. “These students didn’t just fulfill a course requirement; they brought a wave of clinical expertise wrapped in genuine compassion. They’ve truly inspired our team to keep finding creative ways to promote community wellness.”
The Power of Community-Based Clinicals
This clinical project highlights the profound value of community health rotations in nursing education. By meeting families exactly where they are—in trusted community spaces like the YMCA—these future nurses demonstrated that preventative care, emotional literacy, and health education are just as vital as bedside intervention.
The day concluded with plenty of high-fives, smiles, and a community that feels healthier, safer, and deeply inspired by the next generation of healthcare professionals.
