Trinium Spotlight: John A. Heydt, M.D.
A narrative adaptation of Dr. Heydt’s responses to our editor
John A. Heydt brings a lifetime of experience in medicine, education, and leadership to the American University of Health Sciences, where he serves as Professor of Family Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine. With a background that spans clinical practice, program development, and academic leadership—including work with the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine—Dr. Heydt now focuses on shaping the next generation of physicians here at AUHS.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Dr. Heydt was raised in a family that valued both hard work and education. His father, Ronald, worked as a tool and die maker and later as a supervisor at a company that produced precision lenses for medical equipment and telescopes. An athlete and a patriot, he once had the opportunity to pursue a professional baseball career but instead chose to serve in the Army. His mother, Kathryn, was a medical technologist who supervised a blood bank at a University of Pennsylvania hospital. Raised in a small coal-region town, she combined scientific expertise with creativity and a remarkable ability to solve complex technical problems. Together, his parents—and extended family—instilled in him the importance of perseverance, learning, and service, ultimately supporting him as the first in his family to attend college, earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Gwynedd-Mercy University and his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine, followed by residency training at UCLA Medical Center.
While his early career included educational work, much of his professional life was spent in the business and organizational side of medicine, including building physician training programs and contributing to the founding of a new medical school.
