At just 24 years old, Douglas Nguyen celebrated a significant milestone as he received his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree during the American University of Health Sciences (AUHS) 2026 Commencement Ceremony. As the youngest member of his graduating class, Nguyen reflected on his educational journey, professional aspirations, and the importance of perseverance and teamwork.
Nguyen’s path to becoming a pharmacist began at AUHS, where he completed his bachelor’s degree before moving directly into the PharmD program. This educational pathway allowed him to continue his studies at the university and pursue his professional goals without interruption.
“My situation is special because I was here for undergrad, for my bachelor’s, and I moved up immediately into the PharmD program,” Nguyen explained. He highlighted this pathway as one of the opportunities available to AUHS students interested in pursuing pharmacy careers.
After completing his degree, Nguyen passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and became a licensed pharmacist. He is also gaining professional experience in a specialized area of pharmacy practice: pharmaceutical compounding.
Unlike the retail pharmacy environment commonly associated with major pharmacy chains, Nguyen’s current work involves preparing customized medications, including intravenous infusions and chemotherapy preparations.
“I’m doing compounding for pharmacy. It’s a little rare in the pharmacy scene,” he explained, noting that his work differs from traditional retail pharmacy practice.
Looking ahead, Nguyen hopes to continue developing his professional expertise and may pursue additional board certification as his career progresses.
Reflecting on the challenges of pharmacy school, Nguyen emphasized the importance of building supportive relationships with fellow students and discovering effective study strategies. His advice to incoming AUHS students is straightforward: find a good study group and develop a study routine that works.
“It was tough at times, 100% tough,” Nguyen acknowledged. “But as long as you have the right group of people around and figure out your study method, you’ll make it through.”
His experience illustrates the value of perseverance, collaboration, and academic preparation in pursuing a career in healthcare.
AUHS congratulates Dr. Douglas Nguyen on earning his Doctor of Pharmacy degree and wishes him continued success as he prepares for licensure and advances his career in pharmacy.
