Student Profile: Lou James (LJ) San Luis
By Brent Davis and LJ San Luis
If you have gone for tutoring or to Student Services, you may have seen this smiling, ever helpful, and super positive individual, LJ San Luis. “Who is this guy?” You may have wondered.
Where is he from?
“Born in the Philippines but grew up most my life in Long Beach. Long Beach is home.”
What did he do before AUHS?
Spent over 15 years in the operations/management field; first degree in Business.
Why nursing?
I have always been fascinated by the medical field, but I automatically assumed I wouldn’t be able to handle the field due to people being sick, bleeding, or dying. But over the years, dealing with illness, and death around me, and being able to be there for it, I realized I can do it.
Why AUHS?
“When I applied for nursing school, I was told to have a good support system around me.”
What better support is there to have than family? LJ was accepted to a couple of Cal State Universities, but AUHS is near his home and the best place for him, so he doesn’t have to be far away from family.
What is important to him?
Family–being able to help and be there for those who welcome the help; making a difference; and his faith.
What are his future plans?
Currently, the school has been approved for a student-led organization that will aid fellow students in their academic success. I am hoping to further establish this organization and provide more, and better resources for the students such as tutoring, and a variety of guidance resources that we can provide to ensure success in their academic journey, especially during their first year in the program. In the long run, God permitting, he will graduate, He hopes to be able to continue his education. He has been encouraged by many mentors, and previous professors to consider a path in teaching, so that is also something he is considering. He also hopes to use this background to establish a business that would give him the resources to give back to those in the Philippines who lack resources: whether it be medical, or other needs, “I hope to be able to assist.”
The ever-positive, always-assisting LJ San Luis is a student who deserves to be honored and emulated. He has been blessed to be a blessing. Merry Christmas, LJ!
