Student Profile: L. J. San Luis, RN

L J is not only an MSN student, but the AUHS Academic Support Administrator supervising the tutors at AUHS. He is an alumnus of AUHS and is now pursuing a career as a nurse educator.
For Lou James San Luis, a career in education was never part of the original plan. In fact, he once believed teaching was far outside his identity and calling.
“I never thought I’d look into a field in education,” LJ reflected. “I never saw myself as a teacher or a mentor.”
Yet today, LJ has become a growing source of encouragement, academic support, and mentorship for nursing students, demonstrating how unexpected opportunities can lead to meaningful purpose.
LJ earned his BSN at AUHS before being offered the opportunity to remain and serve students. What began as a continuation of his nursing journey gradually opened his eyes to a broader vision for healthcare.
“The opportunity here allowed me to realize there is so much more to nursing than just bedside,” he shared. “One of them being education.”
That realization inspired LJ to pursue a master’s degree with the long-term goal of teaching in either clinical or classroom settings. While balancing graduate studies, campus responsibilities, and an additional job, he maintains a demanding schedule with determination and humility.
“It’s a busy schedule,” LJ admitted, “but we make it work.”
LJ’s impact on students grew naturally. When he first began serving, academic support resources were limited. He started by helping students one-on-one, offering tutoring and encouragement where needed. Before long, those sessions expanded into larger study groups and workshops attended by ten or more students.
“What started off as one-on-one tutoring became little workshops or group study sessions,” he explained.
With the encouragement of campus leadership, including mentors such as Miss Ivy and Miss Alma, LJ found opportunities to continue developing both personally and professionally. Their support helped create space for him to grow into a leadership role centered on service and student success.
Despite the progress already made, LJ believes the work is only beginning.
“There’s still a lot to be done,” he said. “There’s a lot to be taken care of.”
What continues to motivate him is a deep sense of faith and purpose. Throughout his journey, LJ credits God’s guidance for opening doors he never expected to walk through.
“Through God’s grace, through God’s guidance, anything is really possible,” he reflected.
From nursing student to mentor and aspiring educator, LJ’s story is one of unexpected calling, perseverance, and a genuine desire to uplift others. His journey serves as a reminder that sometimes the paths we never planned become the places where we can make the greatest difference. We need more LJs, but he is one of a kind!
