Salt and Light

There are many references to labor in the Bible, and with Labor Day coming up, it seems an appropriate topic. As many of you know, the purpose of Creation is to show God’s glory by creating a kingdom where people flourish. What does labor have to do with flourishing? The Bible links rest with the end state of the Kingdom of God (Hebrews 4). On the other hand, there are a lot of good things to be said about work as well: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work” (Jesus in John 4: 34); “8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. 10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle,[d] for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers” (Paul in 1 Timothy 4). There are even a few jobs to do in the afterlife: judging angels (1 Corinthians 6: 3) and reigning (Revelation 5: 10; 22: 5).
So then, enjoy your rest this Labor Day, and come back ready to work hard. Someday, if you are a follower of Christ, you will rest and reign!
