Graduate Profile: Khanh “John” Nguyen
Master’s in Clinical Research Graduate Builds Community and Opportunity at AUHS

For Khanh “John” Nguyen, the path to clinical research began in Vietnam with an unexpected opportunity.
Originally introduced to the field through an internship connected to a clinical research company, John discovered a professional direction that would eventually bring him to American University of Health Sciences. Now graduating with a Master’s in Clinical Research, he reflects on the importance of opportunity, perseverance, and community.
John first became familiar with clinical research while interning in a marketing position at a company in Vietnam. Although his role was in marketing, the company itself worked in clinical research, giving him early exposure to the field.
“That’s originally how I got introduced to it,” he said.
After learning about the AUHS program through the admissions director, Lily, Nguyen, John began the process of pursuing graduate study in the United States. The program required a bachelor’s degree and English-language preparation, both of which became part of his academic journey.
As an international student, John said one of the most meaningful parts of his AUHS experience has been the value of community. He emphasized the importance of building relationships with classmates and surrounding oneself with a strong support system.
“One thing I take away is the value of community—building a community around you, your classmates and all that,” he said. “It’s a great support community for international students.”
As part of his graduation requirements, John also completed a preceptorship. He was able to secure a placement with another company, which has already agreed to accept him. Now, he is waiting on his work visa as he prepares for the next step in his career.
“I was able to land one at the other company, and they are willing to accept me,” he said. “Now I’m just waiting on my work visa.”
John’s graduation was also a proud family moment. His mother traveled to attend the ceremony and celebrate his accomplishment.
“She’s the reason why I’m here,” John said.
His mother shared her pride in his achievement and in the family’s investment in his future.
“I’m so proud of John,” she said. “I just flew to visit and to join this ceremony yesterday. I think the family feels that this is very worth it to invest for our future.”
For John, graduation from AUHS marks both the completion of a degree and the beginning of a new professional chapter. His story reflects the determination of international students who pursue advanced education far from home while building the relationships, skills, and opportunities needed for the future.
