From Passion to Purpose: Jamileh Jahangiri’s Journey into Pharmacy
From an interview with Jamileh Jahangiri
Jamileh Jahangiri’s path into pharmacy is not just a career decision—it is the continuation of a passion that began long before high school. Today, as a first-year student in an accelerated pharmacy program, she reflects on a journey shaped by curiosity, persistence, and a deep desire to contribute to human health.
From an early age, Jamileh was drawn to science. Whether experimenting with basic chemistry concepts at home or exploring physics in her backyard, she consistently sought to bring what she learned in the classroom into real life. This hands-on curiosity only grew stronger during her high school years, where exposure to chemistry deepened her interest in the foundations of pharmacy.
Her academic journey continued with a master’s degree in organic chemistry, where her passion for pharmacy took a more focused direction. Her thesis on drug delivery systems and nanocapsules allowed her to explore how scientific innovation could translate into meaningful medical treatments. Combined with her experience in biopharmaceutical companies and research environments, Jamileh built a strong foundation that naturally led her toward a career in pharmacy.
When she discovered the accelerated pharmacy program, Jamileh saw it as the perfect opportunity to move forward efficiently without compromising rigor. While she acknowledges the intensity of the program, she values its structure and the ability to complete her education in a shorter time frame. At this stage in her life, that balance is essential.
Beyond academics, the program offers real-world experience. Like many of her peers, Jamileh balances her studies with work as a pharmacy intern, gaining practical insight into the profession while continuing her education.
Her path to the program itself was unexpected. After attending a biology conference in San Diego and exploring opportunities in gene therapy, Jamileh began searching for programs aligned with her goals. Even before completing her application, she was contacted by the university, sparking a series of conversations that ultimately led to her acceptance—just one day before the application deadline. The experience, she recalls, was both surprising and affirming.
What stands out most to Jamileh is the supportive and diverse community within the program. Despite coming from different cultural and academic backgrounds, students form a close-knit cohort grounded in mutual respect. Faculty members, she notes, are not only highly knowledgeable but also deeply invested in student success, providing guidance and encouragement whenever challenges arise.
Academically, the program has helped her connect the dots between her previous studies in immunology, bioengineering, and chemistry. Courses in pharmacology, toxicology, and pathophysiology have deepened her understanding and answered many of the questions she carried from earlier research.
Interestingly, Jamileh also finds value in creative outlets. Drawing and painting—interests she developed earlier in life—remain important to her. She appreciates how artistic expression offers a mental reset, especially when integrated into scientific learning, such as sketching anatomical structures or cellular concepts.
Like many pharmacy students, Jamileh recognizes that time management is one of the greatest challenges. The program demands consistent effort, particularly in preparation for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), a critical milestone for any aspiring pharmacist. She appreciates how the curriculum incorporates regular practice exams and question-based learning to ensure students are well-prepared.
Looking ahead, Jamileh envisions a future that blends both entrepreneurship and research. She hopes to establish at least one pharmacy business in California while continuing to explore scientific advancements that can improve patient care.
For Jamileh Jahangiri, pharmacy is more than a profession—it is a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and service. Her journey reflects not only where she has been, but the meaningful impact she aims to create in the years ahead.
